KU Symphony Orchestra to present concert at Lied Center on March 15
LAWRENCE – Jung-Ho Pak, conductor of the Massachusetts’ Cape Symphony, will guest conduct the University of Kansas Symphony Orchestra in a performance on Thursday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center of Kansas.
The concert will showcase the 2017 KU School of Music Concerto Competition winners Benjamin Dominguez and Shuyi Guan. Following their performances, the KU Symphony Orchestra will perform Maurice Ravel’s orchestral arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.”
Dominguez will perform Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54. A junior piano performance major from East Berlin, Pennsylvania, Dominguez studies under Jack Winerock. He has won the 2016 Kansas City Symphony Young Artists Competition, grand prize at the 2017 Naftzger Young Artists Competition and the 2018 Presser Scholarship Award at KU.
Guan will perform Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major. A doctoral student in piano performance from Shenyang, China, Guan studies under Steven Spooner. She has received first prize in the Schumann Cup International Juvenile Piano Competition for the Asia-Pacific Region and third prize in the 69th Steinway Juvenile Piano Competition for the Northeast Region. Guan has performed in Spain, Germany, China, Canada and the U.S.
Guest conductor Pak has been the artistic director and conductor of the Cape Symphony since 2007. He was the director of orchestras and music director of the World Youth Symphony Orchestra at the Interlochen Center for the Arts from 2003 to 2013. In 2012, Pak stepped down after six seasons as conductor and artistic director of Orchestra Nova in San Diego. He is also a frequent speaker on television and radio, including TED Talks and NPR, and a clinician and conductor at national music festivals.
