LAWRENCE - The University of Kansas University Band and Symphonic Band will present a shared concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at the Lied Center of Kansas.
James Barnes, KU professor of music theory and composition, will open the performance and guest conduct the University Band with his piece, Appalachian Overture. Sharon L. Toulouse, assistant director of KU Bands, will follow with Bloom by Steven Bryant, Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble by Darren Jenkins, featuring Vince Gnojek, professor of saxophone, and Tight Squeeze by Alex Shapiro.
Conductor Matthew O. Smith, associate director of KU Bands, will lead the Symphonic Band in Heart’s Music by David Diamond, Moving Parts by David Sampson, La Vallée des cloches by Maurice Ravel, trans. Donald Hunsberger (featuring graduate conductor Benjamin Harper) and Vulcan, I. Par Farr, II. Mind Meld, and III. Vulcan’s Forge, by Michael Daugherty.
